The Blind Spot

2 Corinthians 3:17-18 states:
Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.

From time to time, Cleve shares how yet another “four-wheeler” (his term for automobiles) got within his blind spot and nearly caused a wreck. There are extra mirrors on the front of both fenders which enable him to see along the sides of the truck. In addition to the mirrors, there are sensors available for trucks that can be placed on either side of the cab to alert the driver when vehicles are present.
However, everything else that doesn’t reflect in the mirrors is invisible to him as a truck driver.

In the same way, we all have our blind spots.

When we look in the mirror, we only see in the natural what is directly in front of us. Such was the situation with Elisha’s servant in 2 Kings, chapter 6. When he saw the opposing army surrounding the city he said to Elisha, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” Elisha instructed him to not fear and prayed that God would open his servant’s eyes that he would see. “Then the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha” (2 Kings 6:15-17).

Like the sensors on the semi that alert the driver to possible dangers, so it is with the Holy Spirit. When we are listening, He guides us and keeps us from harm’s way.

I experienced this first hand when the Holy Spirit instructed me to step back from a student in class. Surprised, but obedient, I took a step back. At the same instant, Brandon shot from his chair and ran to the back of the room screaming to the top of his lungs. The Jekyll and Hyde behavior culminated into an act of rage toward another student, all within my classroom. The student who would have received the assault was protected as Security came and took both students to the office.

I love Psalm 18:2: “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” As we walk out our faith relying and trusting in the Holy Spirit, He will keep us from all danger.

He knows the blind spots we can’t see.

We can confidently walk through life knowing the Holy Spirit is guiding us, even in places where we aren’t aware of potential danger. That’s walking in true liberty! All along, we are being transformed into His image, “from glory to glory.”
